[News Reports] Taiwan is fit to become an independent country – says Chapman
The man who started a petition for Britain to recognise Taiwan as an independent country, has spoken exclusively to Casper media.
Lee Chapman says national identity is a personal freedom and people should not be prevented from expressing that freedom.
Mr Chapman says Taiwan has earned the status to become an independent country and questions the rationale of Britain not to recognise that.
“I believe that the United Kingdom should recognise Taiwan as a country. It fulfills all the criteria of being a country, it has been an independent country since 1912, it has its own democratic government, has its own currency, the list is endless,” he said.
Since he started the petition three days ago, it is steadily gaining momentum with over 10,000 signatures and climbing. The issue of Taiwan’s independence maybe argued in Parliament if the petition reaches100,000 — according to UK law. Though he is optimistic in reaching the number, he believes it would be a great but difficult accomplishment.
Mr Chapman has travelled twice to Taiwan and is marry to a Taiwanese. But, he says the reasons for starting this petition is because of the recently concluded elections — which has placed Taiwan conspicuously in the world stage. And the treatment of 16-year-old Pop star Chou Tzu-Yu, who apologised after waving Taiwan’s national flag on South Korea TV.
The election was historic as it marks the first time Taiwan has elected a female president, who many believe will declare the country independent.
